Often made of material such as cork, it is a place where people can display messages for others to see.

For the CI&A: Science course, one of the project options we had was the creation of a bulletin board. For myself, I decided this option because I thought it would be a good way to make something interactive. When Karyn approached me with similar ideas for her bulletin board we thought it would be a good idea to work together. The result is the image above.

The board was divided into several concepts. Hers focused more on the classification of animals, while mine, at that point, focused on the differences and similarities of the different habitats, and the different animals found in each of them.

The challenge for me was accommodating for the lowest functioning students (for lack of a better term) in my lower class while making it challenging for the smartest of the higher class. My remedy was creating a questionnaire that discussed the components of a habitat. For the most part, all my students were able to do the classification of animals into their habitats. As a plus, Karyn's classification into animal kinds (mammals, amphibians, etc.) and vertebrates/invertebrates were also extra challenging as it tapped into learning they had a year ago.
I designed a classroom lesson around the bulletin board. We discussed the four habitats that were on the board, their differences, and their similarities. The fun part was getting the students to arrange the animals around. I discussed what in each of the habitats can be considered as food, as shelter, and as a water source, which we then reviewed back in the classrooms.
As a plus, I gave out Buddy Small Talk coupons -- originally incentive for students to speak more English in and around school -- as prizes for those who fill out all of the questionnaire questions correctly.

Approved!
